Something I like...

When I was shopping in Williamsburg I found this lovely Christmas ornament!  Made in Richmond...love it!

Baking...

Believe it or not this is my favorite cookbook!  Every year I make two of the cookie recipes for Christmas.  One cookie is a gingerbread and the other is Pepparkakor (translated gingerbread!)  It's a lovely little spice cookie you can't stop eating!!!  I actually make the two cookie recipes twice!  (no matter how I plan it, cookie monster shows up and leaves me with no cookies!)  So either today or tomorrow round two of cookie making!

Hexagons:Tutorial

I love making hexies, and have found this to be the fastest, easiest way to crank these suckers out! I use a method where I don't sew the fabric directly on the paper. It's faster and you don't have to take all of those stitches out!

　



  
What I Do...

I print my hexies on card stock

I cut a hole in the center of each hexie.

I use the same thread color to make the hexies as I do to stitch them together.

 

A lovely card stock hexie;)

The shape of the hole doesn't matter...a triangle is fastest for me. 

 

Pinning....two pins work great for bigger hexies...one is fine for smaller.


 

Start in a corner and stitch the corner down firmly. 

*do not stitch to paper!*

 

Two stitches (using dark thread for photos;)

 

All finished!!!!

Cleaning a Sewing Machine

I use Q-tips!  Yes, you have to get the name brand.  They work the best and are less likely to pull apart.  You have to be careful though!  Take it easy so the cotton on the q-tip won't rip and you'll have one clean machine!


Why use Q-tips over brushes?....They get in places brushes can't, and get residue out of the machine!



Here we go!



I take the thread off of my machine when I clean it so it won't get in my way.



Ok, go ahead and take out your bobbin...

When I'm finished I go ahead and oil the machine.




Things I do

 Clean and oil my machine after every empty bobbin:  It makes a world of difference in the performance of my sewing machine.  I will sometimes use a brush made to clean machines in between so I don't have a drawn out process every time I run out of bobbin thread.




Things I NEVER EVER...EVER, EVER....do/use;)


Paintbrushes: I have found that they just wipe the dust around, and leave bristles in your machine!

Blowing: Never under any circumstance blow into a machine.  You can get spit in it!

Compressed air:  Another no....forcing the dust into the machine just isn't good.

Cleaning with the bobbin case still in the machine:  It's just not a good idea.  It can force dust inside your bobbin case.
